KETAPANG – Tuesday (01/11/2022). Politeknik Negeri Ketapang (Ketapang State Polytechnic) (Ketapang State Polytechnic, POLITAP) carried out community service (PKM) activities by providing training on making compost from oil palm empty fruit bunches to support the reclamation of former gold mining land, attended by 49 students of SMK Negeri 1 Sungai Melayu Rayak.
The training began with an informational session where students were provided with knowledge about the mining industry, compost, making compost from oil palm empty fruit bunches, and its application on former gold mining land. Subsequently, the team from POLITAP demonstrated the production of compost from oil palm empty fruit bunches, followed by hands-on practice by the students.
This training received full support from the Principal of SMK Negeri 1 Ketapang, Mr. Juhara, S.Pd, along with all teachers, allowing the activity to run smoothly and enthusiastically. Based on an interview with one of the PKM team members, Maya Santi, oil palm empty fruit bunches were used as compost material because they are an abundant local natural resource in Sungai Melayu Rayak. Meanwhile, the school principal also stated in an interview that SMK Negeri 1 Ketapang was previously situated on former gold mining land, making this training timely and relevant. Furthermore, the PKM team hopes this training can broaden the students' horizons so they can participate in reclaiming abandoned gold mining lands, enabling these lands to be utilized by the wider community.
