Politeknik Negeri Ketapang Holds Public Lecture on “Artificial Intelligence and Assets for Entering Era 4.0 in the Mining World”

Ketapang, 19 April 2025 — Politeknik Negeri Ketapang (Ketapang State Polytechnic) (Ketapang State Polytechnic, Politap), through the D-III Mining Technology Study Program under the Department of Civil and Mining Engineering, held a public lecture themed “Artificial Intelligence dan Modal Memasuki Era 4.0 di Dunia Pertambangan” (“Artificial Intelligence and Assets for Entering Era 4.0 in the Mining World”). This activity was one of the institution’s strategic efforts to address modern challenges, particularly in aligning the vocational education curriculum with the latest technological developments in the mining industry.

This public lecture featured a distinguished speaker, Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Fahmi Amhar, an academic and information technology practitioner widely known for his expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation. His presence provided profound enlightenment and understanding for students and the academic community regarding how artificial intelligence serves as a vital asset in facing the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era, particularly in the mining sector.

In his presentation, Prof. Fahmi explained that the global mining industry is currently entering a massive digital transformation phase. Technologies such as big data analytics, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and robotic process automation are increasingly being implemented to enhance productivity, operational efficiency, and workplace safety in the field. Artificial intelligence, he added, plays a key role in processing complex data and facilitating more accurate predictive decision-making.

This event also served as an interactive platform for students to ask questions and engage in direct discussions with the speaker. Various questions from students reflected strong interest in this topic.

Mining engineering students must begin shifting their mindsets from merely being heavy equipment operators to becoming data-driven engineers capable of interpreting mine data maps, analyzing geological risks, and predicting production outcomes with the support of AI.

The Head of Department of Civil and Mining Engineering conveyed in his remarks that activities like this will continue to be encouraged as part of the institution's commitment to producing graduates who are not only technically competent, but also adaptive to changing times. He also emphasized the importance of synergy between academia and industry to ensure graduates have maximum job readiness.

“Politap continues to encourage students not only to be practically skilled, but also to understand advancing technological dynamics. The future world of work will require human resources that are creative, innovative, and equipped with an understanding of digital technology, including AI,” he remarked.

The event, held in the Politeknik Negeri Ketapang Campus Hall, was attended by students of the Mining Technology study program, lecturers, and other invited guests. The event was interactive, inspiring, and brought renewed enthusiasm to all participants.

Through this public lecture, Politeknik Negeri Ketapang demonstrated its commitment to delivering vocational education that is relevant and responsive to industrial developments. It is hoped that this activity marks the beginning of a series of learning innovations driving digital transformation across vocational education, especially within the mining sector. (finn)
